Operating primarily within the field of Sociology of Religion but with occasional forays into Communication Studies, Dr. Haskell’s teaching and research focuses on religion in Canada, media in Canada, and religion and media in Canada.
Before academia, Dr. Haskell was a journalist. He started as a print features writer and later moved to TV working as a reporter in London, Windsor, and Waterloo Region. He has received awards from TV Ontario and the Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) for his news reporting. Just prior to joining the faculty at ³Ô¹ÏÍø's Brantford campus in 2005, he spent four years as a professor of Journalism at Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario. He has also enjoyed careers as a high school teacher, professional musician and motivational speaker.
Dr. Haskell’s current research focuses on the influence of Christian norms and values on state governance; he is completing a book on this topic. Recently, his examining the negative effects of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training has received and news coverage and has informed policy changes by in the United States. He is well known for his research on the growth and decline of churches in Canada and the religious engagement of youth. Additionally, he has published on the news media’s portrayal and perceptions of Evangelicals, sermon content analysis, religious marketing via the Internet, and religious youth rallies.
